with a driver, it should be barely closer to your body than the ball is (an inch or two)

This is like taking apart a TV that doesn’t “work” instead of checking to see if it is plugged in first.
OR
Giving an overweight, depressed person anti depressants rather then telling him to start working out.
The point is that this drill (often over used b/c you see immediate, all be it short term, improvements) is putting a band aid on the real problem. It forces you to control the path of the club w/ the arms and hands rather than with a proper rotation to the top of the swing and proper first move down.
A better drill, is to stand with you right foot against a wall. With your arms folded across your chest turn so that your chest is flat against the wall. This is a perfect “turn” to the top of the swing, rather than “dip” which sets you to come over the top.

Putting the tee there is a good way to let you visualize what the path of your swing should be. Not sure if it’s healthy to use it as a drill as it may cause you to hit behind the ball causing fat shots.
The drill another person suggested above (chest against the wall) is a little extreme. For your chest to go up against the wall means you have to sway your body way right.
The drill you want is to let your arms loose / fold your arms and feel like your left shoulder is rotating towards your right foot. You need to feel your weight shifting to your right leg. Keep your lower body in place, i.e. no swaying to the right.
On the down swing, get a feeling as if you’re hitting the ball/ swinging through the ball with the back of your left hand.
Keep the wrist relaxed and loose at all times.
